Marian W. Thompson, LCSW, SEP – Bio
Hi, I’m Marian W. Thompson, LCSW, SEP! An Austinite since 2008, I am a native Texan, born and raised in Houston. Growing up I always had a lot of best friends – people would naturally turn to me for support. I attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I received my B.S. in Sociology.
After graduation, I was a bit of a nomad for a while. I traveled for a couple of years throughout Africa and South America, spending a year in Ecuador teaching English, where I learned to speak Spanish. After returning to the US, I lived in New York City for 5 years, where I worked briefly in publishing before receiving my Master’s Degree in social work from Hunter College at the City University of New York (CUNY).
Since graduating from Hunter, I have 14 years of experience working in various settings, including primary health care clinics, mental health clinics, and community based organizations before going into private practice.
I still enjoy traveling when possible as well as spending time with my family – my husband and 2 daughters, and serving my cat, Isabel. When I have time, I love watching sci-fi and mysteries on TV. During the pandemic, to stop myself from doom scrolling, I started learning French. C’est tellement amusant!
I have so much passion for my work and I consider it an honor to hold space for clients to work through intense emotions and past traumas. I had been a psychotherapist for several years before I discovered Somatic Experiencing and Emotionally Focused Therapy – they were really game changers for me, both professionally and personally. They’ve helped me be an observer to what’s happening inside and helped me better communicate and advocate for myself in relationships. I love helping clients find their voice and watching their confidence unfold as they understand themselves more.
