(Even After Years of Talk Therapy)
A Self-Assessment for Therapy-Experienced Adults Who Are Still Holding Trauma And Ready for Deeper Healing
Your body may still be holding trauma if:
- you’re a high-functioning adult who’s done significant therapeutic work but still find yourself stuck in old patterns
- you’re a parent struggling with emotional regulation despite knowing better
- you’re an overthinking professional or caregiver who can analyze your triggers but can’t seem to stop them
- you’re someone who values relationships but keeps hitting the same walls
You’ve gained incredible insights through therapy, and that foundation is invaluable. Yet you may be sensing that some responses still feel automatic, some triggers still catch you off-guard. This isn’t a sign that therapy “didn’t work”—it’s often a sign that you’re ready to integrate your insights with your body’s experience.
As a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I blend nearly 2 decades of clinical experience with this effective, body-based therapy. I help smart, deep-thinking adults who have outgrown talk therapy heal unresolved trauma and finally feel resourced in their body, connected in their relationships, and in control of their life.
The Five Signs Your Body Is Still Holding Trauma
☐ Sign #1: You Can Analyze Your Triggers, But They Still Hijack You
You might notice:
- You can explain why something triggers you, but your reactions still feel disproportionate
- Anger or strong emotions that seem to come out of nowhere
- Missing early warning signs in your body before you’re already fully activated
What this means: Your nervous system hasn’t received the message that you’re safe now. When trauma occurs, our bodies get stuck with incomplete survival responses that cognitive understanding alone cannot complete.
☐ Sign #2: You Experience Mysterious Physical Symptoms
You might notice:
- Chronic tension in jaw, shoulders, or neck that won’t release despite treatment
- Unexplained headaches, digestive issues, or sleep problems
- Feeling like you’re “bracing” for something, even during calm moments
What this means: You may be holding trauma within the very tissues of your body. The symptoms described above are often your body’s way of communicating with you in a language that goes beyond words.
☐ Sign #3: You Swing Between Emotional Overwhelm and Complete Shutdown
You might notice:
- Emotions that feel “too big” or like they could consume you or that you’re “too much”
- Moments where you suddenly feel nothing at all, like you’ve gone offline emotionally
- Feeling disconnected from your body during times of stress
What this means: Your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, oscillating between fight/flight and freeze/collapse. This is a body-based response to holding trauma that requires body-based healing.
☐ Sign #4: You Can’t Slow Down or Feel Safe Being Still
You might notice:
- Compulsive need to stay busy, productive, or constantly moving
- Feeling anxious or uncomfortable when you try to rest or relax
- Over-functioning in relationships and responsibilities, even when exhausted
What this means: Your nervous system is stuck in hypervigilance where staying busy feels safer than stillness. What once protected you may now be preventing the rest your system needs to heal.
☐ Sign #5: You Feel Stuck Despite Having All the Right Tools and Insights
You might notice:
- Having insights and tools but feeling unable to implement them when it matters most
- A frustrating gap between what you know intellectually and what you can execute
- Feeling like you’re going in circles, revisiting the same issues repeatedly
What this means: You may have reached the limits of what cognitive processing alone can accomplish. Your nervous system may be overriding your conscious intentions to keep you “safe” in familiar patterns.
If You Checked 3 or More Boxes…
Your body is likely holding trauma that hasn’t been fully addressed through talk therapy alone. This doesn’t mean your previous work was wasted—it means you’re ready for the next level of healing.
You’re not broken. You’re not “bad at therapy.” You haven’t failed.
You’ve simply reached the point where your healing journey is calling you deeper—into the wisdom of your body, your nervous system, and the somatic experience of safety and regulation.
I will give you an example…
Meet “Anna” (a composite of several clients): Anna came to me as a high-functioning professional who could analyze her people-pleasing patterns but couldn’t seem to change them. She’d snap at family members, then feel guilty about her “oversized” reactions. She had been through several rounds of talk therapy and had developed a lot of insight into where these behaviors came from.
Through somatic work, Anna learned to feel her boundaries in her body before resentment built up. We found her “islands of safety”—places in her body where she could stay present with the discomfort of saying no. As we built safety together, Anna didn’t just understand her childhood patterns—she felt into them somatically, processed them, and updated these old survival strategies to meet the needs of her present life.
The breakthrough happened when Anna learned to be the caring and protective person for herself that she had always needed. She learned to track her anger as valuable information rather than something to suppress. Free from holding trauma, Anna now sets boundaries without the guilt and shows up authentically in her relationships.
